Daniel E. Martínez is an associate professor in the School of Sociology and co-director of the Binational Migration Institute. Dr. Martínez's research and teaching interests include the sociology of race and ethnicity, undocumented
immigration, and criminology. He is particularly interested in the social and legal criminalization of undocumented migration. Dr. Martínez has also conducted extensive research on deportations and undocumented border crosser deaths along the US-Mexico border.

His current research focuses on 1) Hispanic-Latina/o/x panethnicity, 2) the relationship between so-called “sanctuary” policies and public safety, and 3) the ecological correlates of officer-involved shootings and violent crime in southwestern cities.

Dr. Martínez is a core faculty member in the Mexican American Studies Department, and a faculty affiliate of the School of Government & Public Policy, the School of Geography, Development & Environment, the Center for Latin American Studies, and the SBS Human Rights Practice Program.
