Wonder Makes Me Spark Discovery

Marta Civil's research in mathematics education focuses primarily on teacher education and equity in mathematics education. Civil utilizes a sociocultural approach to the mathematics education of ethnic and language minority students.

Civil is a leader and founding member of several mathematics education programs funded by the National Science Foundation. The Center for the Mathematics Education of Latinos/as, or CEMELA, is an interdisciplinary, multi-university consortium –which also includes the University of California Santa Cruz, the University of Illinois at Chicago and the University of New Mexico –that focuses on the research and practice of the teaching of mathematics to Latino and Latina students in the United States. Math and Parent Partnerships in the Southwest, or MAPPS, focuses on parental involvement in mathematics education. Girls in the SYSTEM (Sustaining Youth in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) seeks to improve science, technology, engineering and mathematics education for girls in grades 3-8 –especially Mexican American, Native American and economically underprivileged girls in southern Arizona.

Civil has taught precalculus, mathematics courses for business majors, mathematics courses for elementary and secondary education majors, and mathematics for practicing teachers. Civil has developed and taught several courses for practicing elementary and middle school teachers, as well as graduate-level courses on research in mathematics education. Dr. Civil’s work is supported by the Roy F. Graesser Endowed Chair in Mathematics, an endowment funded by the Tucson Foundations.
