2024 Distinguished Professor Award

"One of the most rewarding aspects of my career has been to spend meaningful time in the classroom with hundreds of U of A students, so many of whom are pleasant, interested in learning the material and don't complain about hard work."

Dr. Fleischman is a professor of civil and architectural engineering and mechanics who researches methods for designing earthquake-resistant buildings.

Dr. Fleischman has worked as a tall building construction engineer in New York City, a designer in Chicago and a seismic assessor in San Francisco. He also has lent his expertise abroad in earthquake reconnaissance trips to Haiti in 2010 and New Zealand in 2011. He was named a Fulbright Scholar in 2019 and traveled to Italy to teach and do research on earthquake-resistant engineering.

Dr. Fleischman has long found ways to help students get hands-on experience as part of his research, allowing undergraduate students to work on projects for course credit. He also has led presentations, tours and internships for Tucson high school students. He has been named Teacher of the Year eight times by the Department of Civil and Architectural Engineering and Mechanics.
